New thoughts......

From: Rayvenhaus (rayvenhaus@myndworx.com) | Date: 2003-12-04 11:02:13 UTC-08:00
(I certainly hope I'm not breaking the 2 posts per hour rule, I would hate, even though I am an avid dog lover, to kill an innocent kitten.... Though that does bring to mind the question, are there truly any really innocent kittens?)

I was wondering if it would be possible to get one person from each state to join Team Rayvenhaus on taking on another "A box in each of the 50 States" attempt?

If you are interested, please write me back, off list, and let me know.. This is an idea we've been tossing around over the past few weeks (Well, you know, with RayvenMom just now starting to get back into hiking, we've had LOTS of time for talking and scheming and, well, other things!) and we'd like to give it an attempt, but, since we are not independently wealthy, nor work any longer in a job that allows for extensive travel, we'll have to rely on a join effort here.

So, if you're interested, please contact me off list at XrayvenhausX@XmyndworxX.XcomX by removing the capital 'X's.

The thoughts expressed here in are solely my thoughts, unless they're the thoughts of my other personality, then they're not my thoughts...... I think.

Ummm... Yahoo already has e-mail protection code at work. Only the
first half of an e-mail address is visible. I have no idea what I'm
suppose to take the X's out of, and the address doesn't work as is.
Please try again. If you want to display an e-mail address that
spam-bots can't handle, you have to break it up like this:
"dagonell at heronter dot org"

Is there a common theme to these boxes? Who makes the stamp, you or
us? And is there anybody who has *found* boxes in all 50 states?
Wanda maybe?

I don't know about finding boxes, but I've placed them in 25 states
and six different countries so far which, while it may not be a
record, is a pretty impressive number! =)

How about a theme of doing the state bird or something for each of
the 50 states. That would be a pretty cool theme. I bet you could
even talk Funhog into carving stamps for all 50 states. ;o)

Regarding that theme please see:

"State Bird Stamp" - Chickadee (Phyto
and of course the elusive....
"State of Maine" - (Isosceles)

Just in case you want to know, the state bird for New York is the Blue Bird.

Thank you very much for the thoughtful suggestions my friend. Although we
have already come up with a theme for the series we want to do, I shall file
yours away for future reference. As far as Funhog carving the stamps for
us, there is no way that I would bother her with this, they are, after all,
Team Rayvenhaus boxes, and I feel we should carve them no matter how they
may turn out, that's part of the fun, no? Besides, why would I bother
anyone else to carve stamps for my boxes?

Because they like to carve stamps? =)

I was just joking about the Funhog carving ALL the stamps. Fifty
stamps is a lot to carve, and I just like to give her a hard
time. ;o)

Although there is something to be said if somebody local carved and
planted the letterbox for each state. Makes it more personal that
way. But it does take out the fun of carving and creating the boxes
yourself if that's what you like to do. I'm not trying to suggest
that there's a "right" way of setting up a 50 state series--rather,
I'm just throwing out ideas to ponder, good or bad.

And yet again I thank you for your helpfulness on this, lord knows I need
it. It really means a lot to me that you felt the need to add your thoughts
to my letterbox series. Although, as I stated, we have already settled on a
theme and have commissioned the stamps to be carved by none other than our
very own RayvenMom, all we were looking for was volunteers to plant the
boxes in the other states. We'd handle the Washington state one obviously,
and the rest need to be done by someone local.

I can not adequately share the feelings that I have knowing that you are
taking the time to help us out and ensure that we've thought of everything.
Your knowledge and experience levels are more than I can hope to achieve in
such a short time and, as GI Joe points out, knowing is half the battle. I
am glad though that our enthusiasm levels are not so bothersome to you
anymore.

If anyone else is interested in doing a fifty state series, check out
http://www.50states.com It lists the capital city, state bird, order
of joining union, state flag, state flower, state tree, state song, motto,
nickname, quarter design, and largest city for every state, along with
a lot of trivia.

I'm actually taking the info from each states web site as 50states.com
didn't give me the specific info I wanted to use. Take a look at
http://www.myndworx.com/modules.php?name=BOTUS to see what I mean.

50states.com was fine as far as the basic info, but I wanted the date the
symbol was adopted, etc.

How do I plan on addressing what 'issue'? Team Rayvenhaus would like to
place a letterbox in each of the 50 states. Kinda lofty goal I know, but
with the help of the good people of this mailing list, we'll be able to do
it, no matter how long it takes.

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what 'issue' you are referring to at all.

Until I looked at your map, I never realized that the state bird for
Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana (the tri-state area where I live) is the
cardinal! Cool info :-) But you'd think they would try to be a bit

I heard yesterday that ALL the states that have the cardinal as their state
bird, do so because at one time they were considered a part of Virginia.
Just an interesting tidbit from the Old Dominion, learned from a

Just to chime in - the state bird of Massachusetts is the chickadee,
and I have found more than one box with names that have no reference
whatsoever to the state bird here in MA. And of the three (so far)
that I have found, the stamp was a store bought stamp, not hand
carved.

I think Rayvenhaus' idea is a great one and wouldn't impinge on any
other box, especially since it will be hand carved and part of a
nationwide series. I have already signed up to plant in RI and MA
since I live in both states.

I can't wait to see the image of the Rhode Island Red!
